Remember the Omega Juicer I blogged about a short while back. Well, I ordered one. Specifically I ordered the Omega Juicer 8005 (the cool looking chrome one).

As mentioned previously, the juicer is not available locally in Singapore/Malaysia so to get it means to factor in shipping costs from US where it’s available widely.

Out of good luck (or bad depending on how you see it), the website that I go to get my supply or Krill Oil (I’ll probably talk about that another time) had a Free Shipping offer for almost all their products in conjunction with the infamous Black Friday in the US. And the free shipping applies to international shipping as well.

So thanks to Mercola.com for providing this Free Shipping offer. Effectively I have saved at least SGD100 for shipping alone (well, I have spent like SGD360 on the juicer).

So now, based on the latest delivery status. The juicer has left the US and is on it’s way to Singapore. Will blog about it when it arrives.

By the way, Mercola.com is quite a good resource for health related stuff that deviates from mainstream health recommendations that we’ve grown up with. Definitely a good resource that I recommend to everyone.

Often I would come across a lot of articles on the internet that talks a lot about the benefits of juicing. Not just juicing fruits but also vegetables as well.

My impression of a juicer has always revolved around different types of “centrifugal” juicers, the most famous being the Power Juicers by Jack LaLanne since I see it advertised all the time on those shopping channels.

I’ve always been quite impressed with the Power Juicer until I came across this particular type of juicer. It is known as a masticating juicer. The masticating juicer basically “chews” and “mash” the vegetables or fruits to produce the juice leaving a much dryer pulp. The motor itself runs slowly say about 80 rpm instead of the regular juicer that spins so fast you think it’s gonna fly away.

Probably it’s hard to imagine what it’s like so just watch the videos below.

The video below shows this product known as the Omega Nutrition Center 8003.

The following video shows a newer juicer from Omega as well known as the Omega Vert VRT 330.

Both are great juicers in my opinion but rather expensive. So far I don’t think you can find them around here so the only way to get them is to have them shipped from US.

Check out more videos on what these juicers can do. It’s quite interesting. Besides that do also check out articles on juicing and raw foods diet. It’s also very interesting.

Am I going to buy it? I dunno… we’ll see.

My dinner for tonight was a nice juicy Ribeye Steak with asparagus that I cooked. How long did I take? 30 mins for 2 portions of it, minus the time it takes for the meat to defrost as I bought frozen ribeyes. It’s less time than I take to go out and grab myself a takeaway or even to order a delivery service. Including eating it and doing the dishes, it’s slightly over an hour.

So what do you think? Fast enough?

Was out almost the whole afternoon today doing some shopping. Bought myself a decent set of knives for the kitchen. Maybe I’ll blog about that later once I have used it a few times.

Anyway, was at Carrefour and manage to find some frozen Duck Legs. Duck parts is something I can’t really find at the neighbourhood NTUC. Ducks are almost always sold whole so seeing the frozen parts, I immediately bought a pack home to try out.

So here you go, my braised duck leg dinner. A first attempt at it though as the only other duck dish is know is ginger duck.

Duck Leg with some greens

Didn’t really know how to cook the duck initially. Seen quite a few recipes for ducks from books as well as on the internet but unfortunately it was either way too complicated or I didn’t have the necessary ingredients.

So I just did a quick seasoning with salt and black pepper, browned it in a pan and finally braised it with sauteed onions and chicken stock. So luckily it came out decent (at least for myself and the mrs).

A close up of the succulent meat. Yummy

Well, still got 2 more duck legs in the freezer. Maybe I can attempt a roast duck leg for those….

This is what I had for dinner tonight. Steak, and yes I cooked it myself. It’s loosely based on the Steak Diane recipe from Gordon Ramsay’s Cookalong series. You can find the original recipe here.

Loosely based cause I don’t have all the ingredients in hand. Replaced the single cream with whipping cream (bad idea I tell you.) and missing a key ingredient, cognac. I didn’t have any cognac left other than my unopened Cordon Bleu which I really didn’t feel like opening up to use on my first steak attempt.

Anyway, the dish turned out fine albeit a little sweet (due to the cream) and the colour is not as nice and rich (I’m blaming it on the cream again) as Gordon Ramsay’s dish. So the next time I attempt steak, I’ll be sure to follow the recipe more religiously. Time to get some cognac!!

Bro-in-law: We just had it recently.
Me: Let’s bake our own pizza! We just buy the base and top it up as we wish.
Sis: OKAY!

Well, that’s the conversation we had in the car earlier this afternoon. At least that’s what I remember of it (let’s not be so accurate shall we?).

So we got the following items from Cold Storage.

Pizza crust

Garlic and Herb Lamb sausage (we want the insides)

Salami

Tuna

Mozzarella Cheese

Mushroom

Tomato paste

So here’s the result.

Topped and ready to be baked

Tuna Mayo with Prawns (Seafood Delight)

Salami

The finish four flavoured pizza topped with beer!

What a fulfilling dinner. Looks like it’s gonna be another dish that I’ll make more often in future.

Braised Pork Belly Pau or more commonly known as Kong Bak Pau is such a sinful dish. I just love the ones sold by Westlake (Xi Hu). There are a few Westlake stalls in Singapore but the one that comes to mind is at Plaza Singapura. The fatty pork, the rich braised sauce; who could resist that! Those low fat zealots sure are missing out on a true delicacy.

Anyway, since my wife and I both love this dish, we tried cooking it the other day. Just happen to have frozen pork belly at home so we just marinated it heavily with dark soy, light soy, hoi sin sauce, oyster sauce, star anise and garlic. We just mixed all these marinde with the pork and chuck it into the fridge for few hours. Of course marinating it overnight would be the best but we needed it for dinner!

After the marinating process is completed, we just heated up some oil with some more garlic and pour the whole lot in stir frying slightly. I’m using a pressure cooker by the way so after the stir frying we just add in some water and pressure cook the lot for about 20 minutes.

Here’s the result…

I must say I was quite satisfied with the results. The meat was nice and soft, the gravy rich in taste and to top it off, buns bought from the supermarket and it’s absolutely fabulous. Yummy. Will definitely make this dish often in future.

Peiwen went over to her colleague place last Saturday to learn how to make pineapple tarts. Then the next day on Sunday, armed with the one time experience we attempted our own pineapple tarts.

First we cook the grated pineapples. Stir and stir.

After a long long time. Paste browned due to caramelization of the sugars. Done

Mould to shape the dough

Dough from the mould

Shape the edges a some clipper like thing. Supposed to make the pastry nicer due to more surface area during baking.
Nicely shaped.

Roll the pineapple paste ball shaped and put on pastry.

And to the oven it goes.

And after that, it’s all done. As simple as that.

Walnut brownies topped with delightful ice cream. Will definitely help you put on the pounds that you’ve worked very hard to lose!!

It’s pretty simple to do, took about an hour to make including preparation and cooking time. Ingredients include

85g self raising flour

85g cocoa powder

250g fine sugar

250g chocolate bits

330g butter

4 eggs, lightly beaten

125g walnut

1 tsp vanilla essence

All you have to do is sift together flour and cocoa powder and add in the sugar. Then add in the butter (melted), eggs and vanilla essence and blend well. Add in the chocolate bits and walnuts pieces. Mix all these well and pour onto a baking tray.

After that just bake in oven at 180 degrees celcius for about 25-30 minutes and you’re done. Simple right? So if you have an oven, what are you waiting for, just bake your own brownie!!

For the skeptics out there, I’m the one that does the cooking and not Peiwen. She helps out with the preparation and cleaning whilst I do the cooking (I’ve really gotten a good deal here, since prep and cleaning are really hard…).

I just use frozen sutchi fillets (it’s like dory fish) which I got from NTUC. All I did was defrost the fish and marinate with

Olive Oil

Mustard

Basil

Paprika

Garlic and Pepper Seasoning

Butter

for about 30 minits. I then just popped it into the oven at 180 degrees celcius for 25 minutes uncovered. Once done I just propped the fish onto some lettuce and baby carrots and voila, it’s done! Stay tuned for more stuff I cook in future.
